Willow Run Airport is a public airport located in Ypsilanti Township, Michigan, between Detroit and Ann Arbor. Originally developed during World War II as part of the massive Willow Run Bomber Plant complex, the airport played a critical role in the production, testing, and delivery of Consolidated B-24 Liberator bombers. Today, Willow Run serves as a major cargo, corporate aviation, and general aviation airport and remains one of Michigan's most historically significant aviation facilities. 1) 2)
Origins
The origins of Willow Run Airport are closely tied to the wartime industrial expansion of the early 1940s. In 1941, Henry Ford and aviation pioneer Charles Lindbergh helped develop the Willow Run site as part of a vast manufacturing operation dedicated to military aircraft production. The airfield was constructed alongside the new bomber plant to support testing, delivery, and operational activities associated with the B-24 program. 3) 4)
The facility was built on farmland previously owned by Henry Ford and rapidly became part of one of the largest industrial projects undertaken during World War II. 5)
World War II Operations
During World War II, Willow Run Airport functioned as an integral component of the Willow Run Bomber Plant. Newly completed Consolidated B-24 Liberator bombers were tested, prepared, and flown from the airport before entering military service. 6)
Nearly 8,700 B-24 bombers were produced at Willow Run during the war, making the site one of the most important aircraft manufacturing centers in the world. At peak production, the facility employed approximately 42,000 workers and became a symbol of the American “Arsenal of Democracy.” 7) 8)
The Arsenal of Democracy
The Willow Run complex demonstrated the ability of American industry to rapidly mobilize for wartime production. Ford Motor Company adapted automobile assembly-line techniques to aircraft manufacturing, dramatically increasing output. 9)
At its peak, production approached one completed bomber every hour, a manufacturing achievement that attracted international attention. 10) 11)
Postwar Transition
Following the conclusion of World War II, military production ceased and the future of the airport became uncertain. In 1947, the airport was sold to the University of Michigan for use as a research and aviation facility. 12)
The university utilized portions of the former military complex for scientific and defense-related research activities. These programs eventually contributed to the development of the Environmental Research Institute of Michigan (ERIM) and other advanced research organizations. 13)
Commercial Aviation Era
During the late 1940s and 1950s, Willow Run became one of the principal commercial airports serving metropolitan Detroit. Several major airlines operated passenger service from the airport. 14) 15)
For a period, Willow Run handled substantial passenger traffic before commercial airline operations gradually shifted to Detroit Metropolitan Airport, which offered a location closer to central Detroit. 16) 17)
Research and Innovation
The airport and surrounding facilities became important centers for aerospace and defense research during the Cold War. University of Michigan researchers conducted work involving radar systems, remote sensing technologies, and national defense projects. 18)
These efforts contributed to Michigan's emergence as a center for advanced aerospace and defense-related research.
Cargo and Corporate Aviation
Beginning in the 1960s, Willow Run increasingly focused on cargo operations, executive aviation, and general aviation services. 19)
Today, the airport supports:
* Air Cargo Operations * Corporate Aviation * Aircraft Maintenance * Charter Services * General Aviation * Customs Operations
Its long runways and available industrial land make it particularly attractive for logistics and freight operations.
Wayne County Airport Authority
In 2002, Willow Run Airport became part of the Wayne County Airport Authority, which also manages Detroit Metropolitan Airport. 20)
The authority continues to invest in airport infrastructure and promotes Willow Run as an important component of the Detroit region's aviation and logistics network. 21)
Aviation Heritage
The airport remains closely associated with Michigan's aviation history. Nearby preservation efforts led by the Yankee Air Museum help preserve the story of Willow Run's wartime role and the thousands of workers who supported aircraft production during World War II. 22) 23)
The surviving portions of the original bomber plant serve as reminders of one of the most remarkable industrial achievements in American history.
Legacy
Willow Run Airport occupies a unique place in both Michigan and American history. From its origins as part of the B-24 bomber production program to its modern role as a cargo and corporate aviation facility, the airport has continually adapted to changing transportation and economic needs. 24) 25)
Its association with the Willow Run Bomber Plant, Ford Motor Company, and the wartime Arsenal of Democracy ensures its lasting significance within Michigan's industrial and aviation heritage. Today, Willow Run remains both a working airport and a living monument to one of the most extraordinary chapters in American manufacturing history. 26) 27)
