Vernor Steffen Vinge (October 2, 1944 – March 20, 2024) was an American computer scientist, mathematician, and science fiction author whose work influenced discussions surrounding artificial intelligence, virtual environments, and the future relationship between humans and technology. While known to the public through his award-winning science fiction novels, Vinge spent much of his professional career as a professor of mathematics and computer science at San Diego State University.
