Chocolay Charter Township is a charter township in Marquette County, Michigan. Located along the southern shore of Lake Superior immediately southeast of Marquette, the township is one of the principal communities of Michigan's Central Upper Peninsula.

The township is known for its Lake Superior shoreline, outdoor recreation, historic ties to the iron ore industry, and its role as a residential and commercial center within the Marquette metropolitan area.

The largest community within the township is Harvey. The township derives its name from the Chocolay River, whose dark, tannin-colored waters inspired early explorers to refer to it as the “Chocolate River.”

History

The area that became Chocolay Township was originally inhabited by the Ojibwa (Chippewa) people and served as an important seasonal gathering area. The Chocolay River formed part of the boundary established under the 1842 Treaty that opened mineral-rich lands west of the river to American development.

Chocolay Township was created in 1860 when it was separated from the larger Marquette Township. The township later became a charter township in 1972.
