The University of Michigan was founded in Detroit in 1817 while Michigan was still a territory.<ref name=“umhistory” />

Originally known as the Catholepistemiad, or University of Michigania, it predated Michigan statehood by twenty years and served as one of the earliest public institutions of higher learning in the Old Northwest.<ref name=“umhistory” />
