Ralph Cookerly Wilson Jr. (October 17, 1918 – March 25, 2014) was an American businessman, sports executive, and philanthropist best known as the founder and longtime owner of the Buffalo Bills. A founding owner of the American Football League (AFL), Wilson played a significant role in the development of modern professional football and remained owner of the Bills for more than fifty years. ¹⁾

Wilson was born in Columbus, Ohio, and grew up in the Detroit metropolitan area. He attended Detroit University School before enrolling at the University of Virginia. He later pursued legal studies at the University of Michigan Law School. ^{2) 3)}

During World War II, Wilson served in the United States Navy. Following the war, he returned to Michigan and expanded his family's business interests while pursuing a variety of entrepreneurial ventures. ⁴⁾

Before entering professional sports ownership, Wilson built a successful business portfolio through investments in manufacturing, transportation, communications, and industrial enterprises. Operating primarily from Michigan, he developed a reputation as a disciplined entrepreneur and investor. ⁵⁾

In 1959, Wilson became one of the original investors in the newly formed American Football League. After discussions with AFL founder Lamar Hunt, Wilson was awarded the Buffalo franchise that would become the Buffalo Bills. ^{7) 8)}

The Bills began play in 1960 as one of the AFL's charter franchises. Wilson quickly became one of the league's most influential owners, providing both financial support and organizational stability during the AFL's formative years. ⁹⁾

Throughout the AFL's existence, Wilson supported league-wide initiatives designed to strengthen competitive balance and financial stability. His contributions helped ensure the AFL's survival and eventual merger with the NFL in 1970. ^{11) 12)}

Under Wilson's ownership, the Bills won AFL championships in 1964 and 1965. During the early 1990s, the franchise achieved one of the most successful periods in professional football history, winning four consecutive American Football Conference championships and appearing in four consecutive Super Bowls. ¹³⁾

Following his death, proceeds from the sale of the Buffalo Bills were used to establish the Ralph C. Wilson Jr. Foundation, one of the largest charitable foundations in North America. The foundation focuses primarily on projects in Southeast Michigan and Western New York. ¹⁶⁾
