Van Andel Institute

Van Andel Institute (VAI) is an independent nonprofit biomedical research and science education organization headquartered in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Founded in 1996 by Jay Van Andel and Betty Van Andel, the institute was established to advance biomedical research, improve human health, and promote science education. Over time, it has become one of the most significant research institutions in Michigan and a cornerstone of the Grand Rapids Medical Mile. Its research programs focus primarily on cancer, Parkinson's disease, genetics, epigenetics, and other complex human diseases. ^{1) 2)}

Van Andel Institute was founded in 1996 by Jay Van Andel, co-founder of Amway, and his wife Betty Van Andel. A major expansion completed in 2009 significantly increased laboratory capacity and research space. The institute's campus now encompasses hundreds of thousands of square feet dedicated to research, education, conferences, and scientific collaboration. ^{8) 9)}

Biomedical research represents the institute's primary mission. Scientists at Van Andel Institute conduct research into the causes, diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of numerous diseases. Major areas of focus include:

Van Andel Institute played a major role in the development of the Grand Rapids Medical Mile, a concentration of healthcare, educational, and research institutions located along Michigan Street in Grand Rapids. ^{21) 22)}

Since the institute's founding, David Van Andel, son of Jay and Betty Van Andel, has served as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer. Under his leadership, the organization has expanded its research programs, educational initiatives, facilities, and scientific partnerships. ^{24) 25)}
